You Already Know
What You Always Do
A client called me after a hard conversation with one of his employees. He'd been dreading it for weeks — the kind of situation where you know something needs to be said, you know how it's probably going to go, and you know exactly what you're going to do when it goes that way. You've done it before. You know the script.
Except this time he didn't follow the script. He took a different path. And afterward he told me: if it weren't for our conversation, he'd have done what he always did. Instead something different happened — and it was better. Not just for him. For the employee too.
That moment is what coaching is actually about. Not transformation. Not becoming a new person. Just that — a different choice in a moment that mattered.
The Default Is Running the Show
Most people think they're making conscious choices most of the time. They're not. The vast majority of how we respond to the world — especially under pressure, especially with the people closest to us, especially in the situations that have charged our emotions — is automatic. It runs on a program that was written a long time ago.
That program isn't random. It was built from experience. It worked, or at least it seemed to work, and so it got reinforced. You got in a conflict and you withdrew, and the immediate tension eased, so withdrawal became your move. You took control of a situation and it resolved, so control became your go-to. You made yourself agreeable and people responded positively, so you learned to smooth over your own edges.
None of that was a mistake at the time. The problem is that the same move doesn't work in every situation. And over years and decades, the move that once served you starts to cost you. You keep hitting the same wall in your relationships. The same pattern plays out at work. The same conversation happens over and over with different people in different places, but somehow with the same ending.
You already know what you always do. That's the whole thing. Most people just don't know that they know it.
Seeing It Is the Work
Here's what I've noticed working with people: the moment you can clearly name your default — not as a character flaw, not as something broken in you, just as a pattern — something shifts. You have a choice you didn't have before. Not because you've been given a new tool or a better technique. Because you can see what's happening.
That's it. That's the whole mechanism. Seeing creates space. Space creates choice. Choice creates a different outcome.
The coaching I do isn't about installing new software. The wisdom is already in you. You already know, on some level, that the way you handled that conversation wasn't quite right. You already sense that the approach you default to when you're under pressure isn't your best self. You're not blind to it — you're just too close to it, too inside it, to get traction.
That's what another person can do. Not fix you. Not tell you who to be. Just ask the question that helps you see what you already know.
What This Means for You
Think about the situation in your life right now that keeps producing the result you don't want. The conversation that always goes sideways. The dynamic with someone that never quite resolves. The moment where you consistently do something you later second-guess. You've probably already tried to change it. You've told yourself to respond differently.
You've decided, in the calm of a regular Tuesday, that next time you'll handle it better. And then the moment arrives and the old program runs anyway — because the program doesn't listen to your Tuesday decisions. It activates in the heat of the moment, below the level of conscious intention.
The only thing that interrupts that is being able to see it coming. And the only way to see it coming is to understand, clearly and specifically, what your pattern actually is. Not in the abstract. In the real, concrete details of how it shows up for you specifically. That's the conversation I'm here to have.
Not to give you a framework. Not to tell you what your pattern means about you as a person. Just to help you see it clearly enough that the next time you're standing at that familiar fork in the road, you actually know there's a fork. And you can choose.
Nothing is missing in you. The path was always already there.
My client didn't become a different person. He had one conversation that helped him see his pattern clearly enough to make a different choice in a moment that mattered. That's all. That's everything.
